Like the famous Orion Nebula, the Lagoon Nebula is a predominantly red gas nebula in our Milky Way. It contains a large number of dark spots, so-called globules. These are star-forming regions of gas and very fine dust in which the gas collapses under its own gravity. High energies are generated in the process, the resulting radiation is suppressed by the dust and thus leads to a build-up of heat.. Temperature and density now rise so rapidly that nuclear fusion is ignited. A new star is born. The name “Lagoon Nebula” comes from the shape of the nebula, which is said to resemble a lagoon.
