When it gets dark under the southern sky, it appears among the stars in the night sky, the cosmic bat with its pointed ears and glowing teeth. Seen soberly, it is only a veil of dust illuminated by young stars. The dust absorbs the blue light of the stars behind it and makes the dust appear redder than it actually is. This photo is based on simultaneous exposures of about 6 hours each in Namibia by Andy Bender and myself.
