In my image, nebulae, numerous colorful stars, and star clusters form a vibrant portrait of the cosmos, also known as the Skull Nebula. At its center, in the bright white region at the top, lies a gigantic star. Just like our Sun, its eruptions — ranging from flares to coronal mass ejections — hurl enormous amounts of radiation and plasma into the surrounding nebula, shaping it. The dark spots around the nebula and within it are so-called Bok globules, small interstellar clouds of very cold gas and dust that are so dense they are nearly opaque to visible light. They were originally discovered as black spots against dense star fields and even referred to as “holes in the sky,” appearing like holes in the starry background.
