Due to their conspicuousness, the Pleiades have been known in almost all cultures since ancient times. However, their name Seven Sisters is misleading, because even with the naked eye, six or more than seven stars can be seen. The Pleiades are embedded in a gigantic dust cloud, in which the light of the stars is scattered by countless dust particles and thus glows blue. The Pleiades are located near the ecliptic, which is spanned by the Earth’s orbit, and are occasionally crossed by the Moon and some planets.
